Enhancing Steel Hardness with Color Case
Unique Color Variations in Surface Hardening
Color case hardening, also known as case-hardening or surface hardening, is a traditional method to enhance steel hardness.

The new BHC finish is really best suited for modern steels. It is best used on Factory heat treated metal because I can maintain the factory hardness and doesn’t change the hardness the way other heat treatment can.
Very controlled temperatures that are consistent from thick to thin areas, unlike bone charcoal case coloring that is hard to maintain a consistent temperature and hardness during the heating and quenching of the parts.
This I’ve learned and made changes when I was doing a lot of bone charcoal work over the past 30 years. Marlin, Smith and Wesson as well as other factories made adjustments in the range of hardness for the final product to meet the standards of the parts.
